AbstractRouting flow algorithms, developed to compute drainage network for automated process, agelre becoming a widely employed approach to overcome the lack of drainage maps in Brazil. These algorithms work better when the kind of relief studied is considered, to specify the catchment area threshold, which is a key parameter to define stream-flow conditions. This work aimed at an evaluation of such resources in a study dealing with catchment area thresholds, in order to adequate their operation according to the aimed watershed conditions. Drainage networks of four basins located on Sao Jose dos Campos-Sao Paulo State were extracted under automated process using topographic data of the TOPODATA project. The process was accomplished with System for Automated Geoscientist Analyses (SAGA). The drainage networks obtained were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively in comparison with a reference drainage network at the 1:50.000 scale. The quantitative analysis accounted for network length, number of segments, drainage density and drainage frequency. The qualitative analyses consisted in overlapping and visual characterization the networks extracted and the reference. Overall results showed a low performance of all tested alternatives of automatic drainage extraction. The results show that to the watersheds 1, 2 and 3, the drainages network were closer to reference drainage when the single flow type algorithm was used. On the other hand, in the case of watershed 4, the best drainage network resulted from multiflow algorithm approach for flow characterization. The selection of appropriate distinct thresholds among the different watersheds improved the characterization of the extracted drainage network.
